Abstract

There are varieties of the puffer fish in the world. One of its varieties is the yellow puffer fish which is scientifically known as Lagocephalus Lunaris, and is available in Sarawak. This paper attempts to discuss biological, physical, and other attributes of the yellow puffer fish, which became the tourists’ attraction in Betong, Sarawak. Using close observation technique of data collection, this paper finds that the yellow puffer fish contains a different chemical composition of poison that enables it to be eaten. It also finds that methods of catching the yellow puffer which are employed by the local inhabitants of Manggut Village in the banks of Saribas River in Sarawak which is known in the local terminology as membuntal, succeeded in attracting tourists to come from within and outside the country. During the celebration of “Yellow Puffer Fish Festival” which is sponsored by the Betong District Office of the Resident, as one of the programs in making the yellow puffer fish as one of the tourism products of Sarawak, there would be various dishes of the yellow puffer fish which become tourists favorites. As such, this paper finally argues that the yellow puffer fish is a successful tourism product in Sarawak.
