Abstract

The establishment of a Graduate Program in Accounting at the University of Indonesia was aimed at fostering the development of accounting in Indonesia. It had a mission to empower and to strengthen the academic atmosphere of accounting in Indonesia. In addition, based on Act No. 14/2005, it was stated that all lecturers must have a Master degree. Therefore, it is hoped that the Program can accommodate and facilitate the objectives of the Act. The sample object of the research covered 100 Heads of Accounting Programs all over Indonesia, and data were gathered through questionnaires. The result showed that there were some gaps between public demand expectancy and the programs on offer, including tuition fees, thesis topics, research interest and scholarship administration. The analysis of the supply side focused on financial accounting and capital market research interest, the background of the lecturers, and supporting research materials. This situation may result in programs being ineffective in attracting students, especially those from outside Java who generally have less competency and accounting know-how.
