Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate the effect of Ru/Mn(25:75)-Al2O3 catalyst towards As, Hg, Pb, Cd and Ni removal from Perna viridis upon the chelation of potassium citrate. The optimum treatment conditions were achieved at 700 g/g of dosage, at temperature of 351oC, at pH 7, for five hours of duration and in the presence of compressed air (flow rate 895.50 mL/min). The result determined that the calcinations temperature and the dosage of Ru/Mn(25:75)-Al2O3 catalyst gave effect toward the removal of heavy metals from the Perna viridis. As: 0.750.04g/g (54.34%), Hg: 0.40.02g/g (96.79%), Pb: 1.070.02g/g (82.89%), Cd: 0.320.10g/g (75.02%) and Ni: 0.76 0.01g/g (61.83%) were reduced from the original concentration of As: 1.650.89g/g, Hg: 12.420.53g/g, Pb: 6.250.69g/g, Cd: 1.270.25 g/g and Ni: 2.001.05g/g at 1000oC calcination temperature and at 1:0.5 mass to volume ratio of catalyst. ICP-MS and MHS-AAS techniques were used for the metals analysis. The treatment achieved the permissible limit stated by Malaysian Food Regulations (1985) and Commission Regulation of EU (2006). The catalyst was characterized through X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) and Nitrogen Absorption (NA).
