Abstract

In this new era of knowledge-based society and globalization, organizations including small medium enterprise (SME) producers in Malaysia must start to utilize knowledge management (KM) to survive by maximizing their productivity and quality through optimization of knowledge. Implementing KM into SME can be done through KM portal, a virtual workspace that enable knowledge sharing among the industry’s stakeholders. Although there are several portal related to SME, but there are no solid KM portal for SME has yet developed in Malaysia. The purpose of this research is to study the readiness of SME for KM Portal and to develop architecture of Small Medium Enterprise-Knowledge Management (SME-KM) Portal. Further goal for this research is to develop a prototype of SME-KM portal. Survey research approaches were used to verify the readiness SME to implement KM and to obtain user requirements of SME-KM Portal. Sample group of this survey are SME companies and consumer within Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Analysis shows that 85.7% respondent’s willing to share or exchange knowledge and experience with other SME companies. In summary, research analysis shows that, SME in Malaysia starts to realize the benefit and ready to implement KM to the industry. Literature review on Jensen, Bach, Osterle research on Knowledge portals using the three layer architecture, portal observation and data analysis, SME-KM Portal architecture successfully developed. SME-KM Portal was developed to fulfill the research objective in providing platform for SME stakeholders to communicate and implementing KM.
