Abstract

Along with the fast growth of the computing and networking usage, the information search engine system becomes tremendously important in human life. All search engine systems return a list of results that it thinks the results are intended by its users. Unfortunately, most users are unclear with what they are looking for, especially if they are novice in a particular field or domain, and all of the current existing search engine systems do not show the statistical values to help user in conclusion of the searching process.This study investigates the suitable ways to generate and present the searched results into four groups (exact keywords matching results, categorized results by file type, statistical results and relevant keywords results) to its user, so that it is able to help user easily understand the searched results and also the related search domains. Several Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA) and Object-Oriented Design (OOD) methods (such as Use Case Diagram, Class Diagram and Sequence Diagrams) are applied to the analysis and design phases in this study. The user interface design of the proposed system is based on the HCI and Visual Representation principles. The proposed system is implemented by using JAVA, JSP, Lucene, Carrot2 and so on. Sky.d.Search (SDS) search engine system is the outcome of the study; it is designed to extract searchable data or indexes (a.k.a Documents) from several resources (local file systems or websites), which are searched by the system to generate the four groups of results to response to user search query. Although the end-user evaluation results shows that the response speed of SDS is slower than the current search engine systems (approximately 15 seconds), but the statistical result can give user an overall and quick view on the categories of the searched results. The relevant keywords results provide a faster way to allow its user easily find the essential point within the search domain. Hence it proves that the search engine system with statistical results and relevant keywords results can benefit the users.
