The advance in wireless technologies and portable devices such as smart phones, made the Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) popular in the recent years. Nowadays, WLANs have become widely accepted in both private and public sectors due to their ease of install, reasonable prices and their high data rates that can support real time applications. However, fast handoff that is required for real-time applications is not provided in the current IEEE 802.11 specification. Consequently, providing seamless mobility in these WLANs has become a big issue. To solve this problem, a new and fast handoff scheme called Advanced Neighbours Discovery With Caching (ANDWC) is proposed in this thesis. This new mechanism is based on the users’ mobility between two or more different Basic Service Sets. ANDWC can eliminate the scanning delay (which contributes up to 90% of the total handoff latency) in order to provide a seamless handoff by using pre-neighbors-discovery and caching mechanisms. Simulation results show that by using ANDWC, the total handoff delay could be reduced from 304ms (using the standard full scan method) to only 2ms, which is an improvement of up to ~ 98%. In addition to that, ANDWC could reduce the total packet loss from 188 (using the standard IEEE802.11) to only 6 packets which is an improvement of up to ~ 96%.
