Abstract

In recent years Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), as a comprehensive integrated system, has been used by many companies. It has been successful in some and in some others it has failed; this research has been divided to two parts. The first part of this dissertation assesses 8 failure factors and 15 success factors in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and tries to recognize the effective factors. The results from the first part of this research show that two most important and two prominent failure factors in implementing ERP are 'poor planning or poor management ' and 'inappropriate training methods' and the most important success factors are ' Implementing team’s teamwork and composition' and ' Effective training of users'. In implementing a successful ERP system, how users use the system is important, it can be highlighted that training has been identified as one of the most important key success factor in the implementation successful ERP, poor training quality will end up in a failure in ERP implementation. In the second part of this research different training methods for ERP are explored such as: the lecturer, on the job training (OJT), and computer –based training. This research employs case study as the research method where data collection has been done on numbers of SMEs in Malaysia. Data are collected using survey and interviews and the findings of data analysis is used to develop a client based training system that reduce learning time and training cost but at the same time increase user proficiency on ERP system. The citations and referencing in this research is based on Microsoft Word 2007, APA format.
