Abstract

Performance measurement is deemed as an important tool to ensure that the quality standards, aims and goals of both the respective employee and organization are accomplished. Currently, in INTI University College, a private higher education establishment in Malaysia, the respondents usually revert to answering lengthy questionnaires manually when carrying out performance appraisals. However, this method has been considered as ineffective and therefore, the aim of this research is to develop and implement a system prototype for the performance measurement of the academicians in INTI-UC. The prototype was developed by adapting the Balanced Scorecard framework which measures the performance based on Key Performance Indicators that determines the performance criteria. Various methodologies were employed to elicit user requirements and the results were then used to model the KPI categories. Based on the evaluation results, the outcome of the prototype proved to be highly successful as its implementation established the fact that the application of the system helped the academicians to plan and manage goals that are achievable. Furthermore, the academicians were able to keep track and improve on their respective performances and be aligned to the organizational mission and goals. Several significances of the prototype development were (a) the results produced were more reliable, transparent and consistent when measuring performance; and (b) it provided a useful feedback system that can function to identify and correct personal performance strategies. Therefore, looking into the numerous benefits such a system can offer, it would be advantageous to implement it as an application to measure the performance of academicians in INTI-UC. With it being applied as a measuring tool, its implementation could also be considered as a possible means of innovatively measuring the performance of the academicians in the Malaysian education sector.
