Malaysian children are exposed to many languages in their environment. Using the approach of participant-observation in various settings and contexts, spontaneous spoken data of Malaysian children between the ages of five to nine werea manually recorded and transcribed for analysis. Focussing on the use of language which were articulated for the purpose of achieving specific aims, this study identifies how children employ various strategies to perform specific speech acts of making requests.
