Supervision of postgraduate students is a long process of assistance and guidance by supervisors. The way supervisors and students communicate and collaborate is of utmost importance. Be it through, weekly progress, monthly reviews, telephone calls, electronic mails, chat conversations, supervisors and students agree upon the most effective ways that they deem appropriate to communicate and collaborate. Nonetheless, a number of problems arise during the postgraduate supervision process. Students often complain about the lack of feedback from their supervisors or that the latter is not available for discussions. On the other hand, supervisors usually complain that students do not produce written work in order to monitor their progress or that they have unrealistic goals. In turn, this leads to lengthy candidatures as well as low success rate in the completion of postgraduate education. As a matter of fact, with the increasing load of work and commitments for both supervisors and students it is increasingly difficult for the parties to keep abreast with each other. Consequently, the mobile phone has become a very handy means of communication and collaboration. For example, a text message (SMS - Short Message Service) is quickly sent to cancel or reschedule a meeting and comments can be sent on a particular piece of work. Therefore in line with the mobile revolution, the education sector has known and experienced the possibilities that mobile devices can offer. As such, mobile applications or systems are being used for the purpose of learning, performing administrative tasks by both students, academic and non-academic staff of institutions of higher learning. Consequently, the postgraduate supervision process is called upon to innovate in the way the process is being carried out. This report outlines the approach, design, development and implementation of an M-Supervision (mobile supervision) application for the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya. A survey conducted, revealed that most postgraduate students use smartphones and use the technologies associated to them in their daily activities. It was also established that postgraduate students have some difficulties in communicating and collaborating with their supervisors. Although the means of communication are satisfactory, a mobile solution to the present state of affairs was welcomed. This report further investigates the integration of mobile technologies in the education sector. Most undeniably, the latest mobile technologies are well integrated in the education arena and the application of these technologies is well guided. Subsequently, a framework for the adoption of M-Supervision is proposed. The framework attempts to encompass the various issues surrounding the implementation of a mobile solution for the supervision of postgraduate students. The development and evaluation of the M-Supervision prototype dampened the apprehensions of deploying the application on devices with different capabilities, such as, screen size, keypad or touchscreen input methods. The general conclusions drawn reflect that postgraduate supervision can be complemented with the use of a mobile-based solution.
