Abstract

In this dissertation, a prediction based bandwidth controlling mechanism at the end user’s network access link (a network perimeter) is proposed for bandwidth management, particularly, to manage the network traffic and bandwidth allocation per host basis. In a local area network (LAN), a static bandwidth allocation (STA) is commonly used with no fair bandwidth allocation and not based on per host’s bandwidth need; the proposed prediction-based bandwidth controlling mechanism can help to maintain fair bandwidth allocation, maximize bandwidth utilization and provide dynamic allocation of bandwidth based on the bandwidth usage per host. Proposed prediction based is a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) mechanism. DBA is achieved by allocating bandwidth on a per host basis, in a cycle of prediction bandwidth allocation within a time frame and each host’s bandwidth usage changes before leaving a network to WAN/Internet. Normal Prediction Interval (Normal PI) is a statistical method which is applied to compute two-sided simultaneous prediction intervals (Minimum and Maximum values) from real-time sample history of bandwidth usage per host in a short period. Future bandwidth usage per host will be generated from the prediction interval statistical calculation. It will be used to allocate bandwidth per host dynamically. The Normal Prediction Interval (Normal PI) statistical method is used to estimate future bandwidth usage per host with certain level of confidence within interval (two-sided) of high (Max PI) and low (Min-PI) value. The results show that Normal PI method can help in achieving fair bandwidth allocation per host, and with maximum bandwidth utilization in a shared network link or network perimeter. The results of the evaluation also show that bandwidth is allocated dynamically per host and there is a proper control of bandwidth usage.
