<p><font face="Arial">An experimental rig was fabricated to evaluate impellers for their mass transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics. Various impeller designs were investigated for bioreactor applications where the suspensions are highly viscous. From the collections of impellers available, a standard curve blade impeller was found to give better dispersion and suspension characteristics for similar power input when compared with other impellers. A maximum saving of 30% power input and 15 % increment in mass transfer coefficient was recorded for this impeller within the range of experiments conducted. More experimental work is still in progress to evaluate the effect of design variation to the standard curve blade impeller mentioned and further improvement in performance is expected.</font></p>
