Abstract

Beside its core business of providing education to its clients (the students), a university campus is actually a mini community in itself, whereby other ancillary services such as administration facilities, residential housing, food catering, recreation activities and others need to be provided. All these activities result in wastes being produced, whether it is solid wastes, waste water discharges or air emissions. In our drive to promote sustainable development concept for the students, a university campus can be used as an example to implement some form of environmental management system. The 'greening' of University Malaya project was initiated as a series offinal year student projects since two years ago. The projects that have been thus far include solid waste management in the residential colleges, monitoring of the lake water quality on campus and air and noise monitoring as a result of transport services. This paper describes the results that have been uncovered so far and our suggested plan of action for future implementation of an environmental management systemfor the university community.
